Folk Week: François Virot

(French Freak-folk artist  François Virot)

François Virot is something special.  Wildly influenced by everything from crust-punk to Sonic Youth, he picked up his first guitar at age seven hoping to one day become the next Kurt Cobain.

The end result couldn’t be further than the grunge legend and to be honest, I’m relieved.  François Virot’s debut album Yes or No is a refreshing reminder of what made the revival of freak-folk so exciting in the early 2000s.

Yes or No is haunted by handclaps, beautiful layered acoustic guitar work and Virot’s tortured yelping and howling vocals.  It’s impossible not to compare this release to Animal Collective.  The same mix of youthful, playful lyrics and an otherworldly sound that shone through in Sung Tongs is present and alive here.

Grab Your Banjo And Lets Get Folky This Friday

It's folk crazy at flip the tape HQ.

As part of YOUTH WEEK, It feels like it's the right time to take a nice, long look at the world of folk music.  Constantly misconstued as old, dusty and antiquitated, you can expect to have your conceptions shattered this friday.

I'll be exploring the world of folk, from the origins of freak-folk in the 70s (vashti bunyan), to the new wave of anti-folk (kimya dawson, Elizabeth mitchel, Paul Baribeau) and to the youthful sub-genre of american folk-punk (brian lugo!, victor V-B and more!).

Tune in to this friday's show for a two hour folk-music extravaganza.   You can also check back to this blog for daily folk artist profiles (and mp3s!) throughout the week.

So celebrate Youth Week with style, by twanging your banjo and swilling some moonshine*

*please don't drink any moonshine, especially if you're youthful.

VICTOR V-B

(Illinois acoustic folk-punk musician, Victor V-B)

The joy of acoustic folk-punk is that it's a very raw style of music.  Most folk-punk outfits are generally solo-projects and sideprojects of various musicians who simply want a break from their usual style of song writing.

Illinois native Victor V-B is drummer of pop-punk group Arkansas? and in his spare time picks up an acoustic guitar tours/records solo.

His songs are lo-fi, simple acoustic numbers and his voice routinely breaks as he strains to hold notes.  Yet there's something utterly pretty about this broken, earnest style of song-writing.

It's youthful, unpretentious and endearing.

listen with:  Ghost mice, Brian Lugo!, New Found Glory's latest release.

Midweek blog-update! - Finally a non-friends header.

This week JOY is celebrating International Women's Day on Friday the 6th of March.  To join in on the festivities I'll be co-hosting  Flip the Tape with none other than Jenny of JOY's Local And Vocal.    For the special episode we'll be sharing our favourite music from female artists and songwriters, from homegrown acts like Beaches and Sia to underground D.I.Y folk singers like Madeline and Lindsey Mills.

We'll also be joined by special guest Evelyn Morris aka Pikelet.  We'll  be talking about her recent NZ Tour, upcoming show at the Tote and  recently released EP entitled 'Not So Still'.

Episode 23 "The One With Mikey Young" - Friday 2pm-4pm 20.02.2009

Well what a big week!  This friday heralded the first special guest on Flip The Tape for 2009.  Joining me in the studio on friday was Mikey Young, Guitarist of Eddy Current Suppression Ring

A band that have had a strong local following since their mid 00s debut, Eddy Current have cut a niche in the local melbourne pub-rock/garage rock scene, releasing a string of albums and 7''s that call back to the days of 70s and 80s lo-fi punk and DIY rock.   2008's "Primary Colours" was mixed and recorded by Mikey Young on a 8-track recorder.   It was nominated for "Best rock release" at the 2008 ARIAs and has been shortlisted for the prestigious AMP award of 2008.

Mikey hit the studios to have a chat about their surprise ARIA nomination, their tour of the U.S, lo-fi recording aesthetics and the band's love for Vinyl records.

You'll be able to grab a podcast of the interview as soon as I cease being lazy and put it together (so around tomorrow afternoon).

In the meantime, you can check out Eddy Current Suppression Ring as they support New Orleans Organ/dance/funk artist "Quintron" on his australian tour.

THESE HANDS COULD SEPERATE THE SKY
It's about time that a band went and mashed together my favourite elements of the 90s midwest emo scene (mineral, christie front drive et al) with the sound and deafening sonic assault of a post-rock band.    Already making waves in the local melbourne indie scene, you can check out These Hands Could Seperate The Sky live this thursday for FREE with band Minutes.

Tune in tonight to hear "To the lighthouse" from their kicking-rad demo cd-r.

Go and treat your ears.
